About University of Central Florida

The University of Central Florida, commonly referred to as UCF, is a metropolitan public research university in Orlando, which is a city in the central region of the US state of Florida, the county seat of Orange County, as well as the center of the Greater Orlando Metropolitan area. Orlando was incorporated in 1875, becoming a city in 1885, and it is today known as the 5th largest city by population, which was estimated at a number of more than 230 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census.


UCF was founded in 1963, on June 10, as Florida Technological University, of which goal was to provide highly trained personnel, to support the Kennedy Space Center, which was located 35 miles, east of the university, being renamed as the University of Central Florida, in 1978.


Since it was founded, UCF grew, being currently known as the largest university in the state, as well as the 3rd largest one in USA, by enrollment, which was estimated at a number of over 50 000 students, in 2009, from 140 countries, as well as other 50 states, offering more than 225 degree options, through 12 colleges and 11 campuses, located throughout Florida.


The athletic teams at UCF are known as the Knights, having Knightro as their mascot, who compete in the NCAA’s Division I as part of Conference USA, in various sports which include baseball, basketball, cross country, football golf, soccer, tennis and several other sports.


The list of UCF notable alumni contains names such as John C. Bersia, who won the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Writing, Fernando Caldeiro, who is a NASA astronaut, Lesa Roe, the director of NASA’s Langley Research Center, Lee Constantine, Florida State Senator in the 22nd District, as well as many other great personalities who made themselves notable in science, politics, business, art and entertainment, as well as athletics.
